Description:
An oblong, leather-bound volume containing receipts of payments made by James A. Rich to various people in New York, New York spanning the years from 1825 to 1847. Receipts of payment were made for brick work, boarding payments, lumber, mason work, painting, plastering, and rent. Several payments concerned properties in Harlem such as Bensel House and Harlem Commons. Other receipts regarded properties on Greenwich, Franklin, and N. Moore Streets. Not all receipts indicate the reason for payment. Receipts of payment by Rich & Woodruff were made to individuals from 1825 to 1826. Reading the volume back to front Rich made payments to Woodruff during the same year. The remainder of the volume comprises payments made by Rich. Names of recipients of payments include Alexander Barr, Henry De Camp, Cornelius De Pew for masonry work, Samuel Johnson, Mary Nisbet, Stephen Rich for rent for storefront and cellar, Henry Van Dalsen, Richard Van der Heyden, and Simon P. Wyckoff. Seven leaves are laid in the volume. Paper tabs have been affixed to some leaves in the middle of the volume. Written on the inside front cover: Mr. Whitehead, Anthony St. Written on the inside back cover: Harvey Hunt, No. 396 Pearl St. The receipts in the volume are written parallel to the spine in the manner of a note pad. Several leaves cut out near the end of the volume.
