Born in Breslau, Germany to Wilhelm and Henriette Bruck Sidenberg. The Sidenberg family immigrated to the United States in 1853 eventually settling in New York City. Sidenberg and his brothers, Gustavus and Henry, owned and operated the family business G. Sidenberg & Co. The company was a manufacturer and importer of collars, cuffs, ruffings, sleeves, and veils specializing in linens and lace for ladies. Richard was a lace merchant for the company. Additionally, Sidenberg owned several properties in Manhattan and a multitude of shares in other companies. He became a naturalized citizen in 1872. Sidenberg was a prominent member of Congregation Emanu-El in Manhattan and the Harmonie Club. He donated generously to Jewish charities and local hospitals. Sidenberg married Matilda Schafer in 1875. They had seven children: Florence Hattie, Minnie, Elsa, William, Alice, Claire, and Arthur.
