Description:
This photograph album contains fifty-eight images mostly documenting New Caledonia and the French penal colony of Île des Pins, probably around the time of its establishment in 1872 to about 1879. The album seems to have belonged to French chemist Charles Malan. The majority of the pages in this volume are blank and do not contain photographs (p. 62-192). The fifty-eight photographs mostly depict indigenous people, landscapes, and landmarks within Nouméa, Île des Pins, and Sydney. The majority of the images in this album are of New Caledonia, twelve of which represent the penal colony for members of the Paris Commune. The Île des Pins images include the landing dock, French police, the garrison, the officer's refectory, a butcher, Communards in and around a lean-to, the palace of Queen Hortense and King Samuel, the Vao Mission, and the Catholic Church. The remainder of the New Caledonia images largely represent indigenous people and landscapes in and around Nouméa. There are also three portraits of indigenous people, two of a New Caledonia family and one of Kanak women. Several images depict indigenous leaders, including Chef Guaro, Chef Gélina, and King Samuel and Queen Hortense. The images of Sydney, Australia include city landmarks and local businesses, including T.W. Stilling Outfitter. There is also an image of a certificate awarded to Charles Malan at the 1879 International Exhibition in Sydney. Some of the images bear a stamp on the verso reading, "Allen Hughan," referring to the official government photographer of New Caledonia.
