Description:
Manuscript catalog of the 863 volumes of the library of the University of Pennsylvania in 1822, followed by brief lists of maps and charts. The catalog is arranged by format (folio, quarto, octavo, and duodecimo), then subdivided roughly by subject, with the titles in each section listed by date of edition. The earliest books are from the middle and late 16th century; the newest book in the list is a Hebrew grammar published in 1821. Subjects include classical literature and history, modern history, philosophy, theology, science, medicine, law, languages, and poetry, but the subject divisions of the catalog are more general. Donors are noted, and the library of John McDowell, professor of natural philosophy and provost of the University, bequeathed to the University at his death in 1820, figures largely in the total collection. Later notes include additions, corrections, and notes of volumes to be sold.
