Description:

C. Hermann Berendt's transcription of a vocabulary list of 17 words, and the numbers 1 to 10, in English and Garifuna, from a brief article published by Juan Galindo, in 1833, under the title Notice of the Caribs in Central America, in the third volume of the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society (p. 290-291); Galindo dated his article from Government House, Trugillo (Truxillo), 1833. Berendt also includes introductory remarks (p. 1), excerpted and paraphrased from Galindo, concerning the history of the Garifuna people (referred to here as Caribs), mentioning their origin on the island of St. Vincent; their transport first by the British to Roatán in 1796, and then by the Spanish to Truxillo (Trujillo) shortly later; their dispersal along the coast of Honduras; and their founding of the town of Stann Creek (today Dangriga), in Belize. To the right of some of the Garifuna words, Berendt notes in red ink, for comparison, the equivalent Carib words as spoken in Guyana, from W. H. Brett's book The Indian tribes of Guiana.
