Description:

A manuscript collection of Yiddish folk songs, almost all copied from Joel Engel's Jüdische Volkslieder, vol. 1 (Moscow: The Author, 191-?, preface dated in 1909). Engel's arrangements are based on songs originally collected by Saul M Ginsburg and Petr Marek, Evrejskija Narodnyja Pěsni V Rossii. Voskhod, 1901. The cover states the name Jüdische Volkslieder and include the initials BK, perhaps the name of the owner or the copyist. The title page however reads Chassidische Volkslieder "after Engel, Ginsburg, and ?". The songs have Yiddish, and at times German and Russian, texts underlay with additional stanzas appearing at the end of some songs without music. The songs were numbered by the cataloguer from 1 to 9. Most songs are for solo with piano accompaniment, except nos. 4 and 6 (for solo without accompaniment) and no. 9, a duet (in Engel's printed work the second voice of this duet is a textless violin part). Titles of the songs are in different languages (Yiddish, German and/or Russian in Latin or Cyrillic characters). The pieces are variously described in the titles as Chassidic, Gypsy-style, soldiers' songs, and love songs. The last four pages are blank, perhaps left to include more songs, as the note "E moll in a" in the upper staff of the last blank page seems to indicate. Another composition for voice and piano by Engel written in a different paper was appended to this manuscript and is numbered no. 9: "Omrim: jeschnah erez." This is an original composition by Joel Engel set to a text by Saul Tchernichowsky. It was published in Shalosh Manginot. = Drei Lieder, Juwal Nr. 122, Gibt's Ein Land: Op. 39, Nr. 1. Berlin and Jerusalem: Juwal, 1923. Although the handwriting does not appear to be Engel's, this manuscript emanates from circles close to the composer around the time of composition and publication, as shown by the date "April 25, 1915" on page 6.
