Goswami Tulsidas was a reveered poet and saint who lived in the city of Vāraṇāsī, best known for his works devoted to the Hindu deity Rāma and especially his retelling of the epic Rāmāyaṇa; he was considered by many Hindus of his day to be an reincarnation of the ancient poet Vālmikī.
