[Medical treatises]

Date:
1750
Description:
Three medical treatises in Italian. The first, written by one hand on the first seven gatherings, addresses women's health, divided into illnesses and afflictions of mothers; young and newly married women; new mothers; and infants (f. 2r-55r). Descriptions of ailments are frequently followed by sections on cause, prognosis, and cure. The second, written by another hand on the eighth through eleventh gatherings, is on venereal diseases (f. 58r-85v) and is followed by a list of chapter headings by a later hand (f. 86r-86v). The third and longest is a more general treatise on medicine (f. 90r-185r), begun by the same hand as the second at the beginning of the twelfth gathering, but picked up by a third hand in the middle of a sentence in the fifteenth gathering. Physicians of the 17th century cited include Michael Ettmüller of Leipzig, Herman Boerhaave of Leiden, and Francesco Redi of Florence. A few contemporary medical notes in Latin are written in ink on the flyleaves and pastedowns.
