Notes:
Two plans of the city of Jerusalem on one sheet. On the left the view is based upon illustrations and accounts of Biblical Jerusalem as it was at the beginning of the1st century CE. At the right is a modern view of the city as it appeared in the 16th century. Each is accompanied by legends listing important structures and places that are keyed to the plans. In the lower right is a vignette of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments along with Aaron, whose vestments are listed in the table to the right.; These views of Jerusalem and other cities first appeared in v. 1 of "Civitates orbis terrarum", a work of over 500 city views issued in Cologne from 1572-1618 by Braun & Hogenberg. Braun edited the 6 volume set which was largely engraved by Hogenberg.; Plate extracted from "Beschreibung und Contrafactur der vornembster Stät der Welt," the German text edition of "Civitates orbis terrarum issued: Cölln : Typ. G. von Kempen, 1574-1576. Plate is from vol. 1 and bears number "53" on verso.; Online version available via Colenda; According to Laor, the maps were drawn after Laicstain and De Jode's original but lack any attribution. Cf. Laor, p.152.; Double plate with Latin text on recto with accompanying text in German on verso.; Acquired for the Penn Libraries with assistance from the Rosengarten Family Fund.
