Black-and-white photographic prints depicting members of Philadelphia's Ethiopian, Russian Jew, Liberian, and Tunisian communities. These candid photographs and portraits show people from various immigrant communities at religious services, socializing, at work, attending cultural events, and taking English classes. The Urban Mosaic project included ten families, for the purpose of conveying that the world is already ethnically globalized. Despite political opposition, the purpose was to show that all cities in the United States have a multitude of ethnic communities, to demonstrate that these cities are not only economically, but also ethnically globalizing. The project was intended to give power to underrecognized communities in the form of healthcare, among other human rights, and to combat the prejudices against them. There is a catalog regarding the Urban Mosaic project at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Harvey Finkle (born March 28, 1934) is a self-taught documentary still photographer and photojournalist who has documented social, economic, cultural, and political issues across the city of Philadelphia, the United States, and the world. Finkle's work largely focuses on activism relating to historically underrepresented communities, including people living on low income, unhoused/unsheltered/houseless people/people experiencing homelessness, refugees, immigrants, and disabled people.
