Description:

Collection of copies of or extracts from various documents concerning Mayan languages, made by C. Hermann Berendt in a notebook of lined paper. Most of the 18 entries pertain to vocabulary or reproduce texts in one of the languages (especially texts on the Catholic sacraments). This item is the first of 3 volumes; for vols. 2 and 3, see Ms. Coll. 700 Item 43 and Item 44. In the present item, entries are numbered, and a table of contents is included (f. 2r-v). All of the material is handwritten by Berendt, except for entries 17 and 18, which are clippings pasted into the notebook. Entry 17 is a clipping from a broadside (hoja suelta) giving an imperial proclamation dated November 1864 (Jefes y habitantes de Chan Santa Cruz ...) in Spanish and Maya on facing pages (as arranged by Berendt). The clipping of entry 18 (headed: Indios mayas) relates a news item that was reported in the newspaper Diario del Imperio (the source of the clipping itself is not identified). All of the handwritten entries are accompanied by notes on sources, some of which are mentioned in the table of contents. Additional details on sources are often noted at the heads of entries. In some cases, Berendt has combined sources, compared sources against one another, made corrections to the material that he has copied, and/or added his own notes. For instance, in entry 1 he states (p. 1) that he has made corrections to Waldeck's vocabulary from Beltrán, as well as from the Diccionario de Providence (Diccionario de Motul?); in entry 5, he indicates (p.37) that the corrections made to the words in the Petén dialect (also called Itzá) are his own; and in entry 6 he explains that the designation Punctunc or Puctunc for the dialect spoken by the Indians in Palenque and other parts of Chiapas is attributable to a printer's error in the French translation of Galindo, for what should be Putum, and also that he has found it to be the same language as Chol. Several items were laid in: a loose clipping that is another copy of the Spanish version of the imperial proclamation pasted in for entry 17, evidently from a different source (with slight differences); 1 leaf with a few vocabulary words headed: Maya dialecte; and 1 leaf and 1 bifolium with notes in German pertaining to the works of Waldeck and Béltran. The latter 2 items are housed in a separate folder and shelved with the manuscript.
