Name:
Berendt, C. Hermann (Carl Hermann), 1817-1878
Date:
1874
Description:
Notes in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt pertaining to the vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar of the Subtiaba language (also called Maribio) spoken in a village of the same name, in the vicinity of León, on the Pacific slope of Nicaragua. The notes comprise a gathering of six leaves, with the title: Apuntes sobre la lengua de subtiaba (meribio). Accompanying the gathering are two loose items: 1) a bifolium containing notes that Berendt copied from a work of E.G. Squier (Nicaragua, vol. 2), under the heading: Apuntes para la gramatica de la lengua de subtiaba por el coronel D. Francisco Dias Zapata; and 2) a loose sheet containing vocabulary in Spanish and Subtiaba, attributed to Father Dorotea Amaya. At the head of the gathering, Berendt notes that Squier called the language Nagrandan, and explains why. Berendt states that his notes are based in part on those of Father Amaya. For a comparative vocabulary by Berendt that includes Subtiaba, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 144.
