Description:
Approximately 100 (largely original, but with some copies) miscellaneous legal documents, accounts, petitions, and letters, covering the years 1636-1718. The documents concern, for the most part, the business of numerous members of two branches of the Gondi family, in Italy and in France. Most of the correspondence is between Giovanbattista Gondi and his French cousins, as well as his Italian business partners, dealing with trades, sales, and exchanges of different currencies for a profit, probably through bills of exchange. In certain cases, especially for letters between Giovanbattista and his Italian associates, the tone is more personal and colloquial, expressing concern or apprehension for transactions, or skepticism towards members of the French branch of the Gondi family. A small number of documents concern private matters of the Gondi, including the dowry of Caterina Gondi. The last part of the miscellany (f. 540-591) contains documents addressed or drafted by Giovanbattista Gondi while he was a balì (a prestigious office within the order of Santo Stefano). Marginalia and other miscellaneous notations appear throughout the volume. Many documents contain notarial signatures and seals. Contemporary foliation, starting with f. 370, suggests that this was part of a larger manuscript.
