Notes:
Title devised by cataloger.; Probable place of and terminus ante quem for production from auction house's description.; Wood box with slightly vaulted lid, both covered in leather (scored with rays on sides), fitted with 5 metal hinges in rear and hinged metal latch and metal lock in front and reinforced with 10 metal straps (5 each on lid and box; 4 on lid and 3 on box intact). Evidence of lining of interior of box (now wanting); leather lining of lid damaged.; Affixed to the lid lining is a paper slip with a woodcut of Christ as Man of Sorrows (imago pietatis), hand-colored in brown and green, now much damaged. What remains depicts Christ seated on the shaft of the cross (laid horizontally on a stone with greenery in foreground and background), head haloed (upper portion of face torn off), arms crossed and tied at the wrists, waist wrapped in a cloth, left leg bent at the knee and right leg extended (right foot torn off). Christ's right side and hands show the wounds of crucifixion. Two nails lie on the ground behind Christ's left heel and a third in the background greenery. Beneath the image is a letterpress caption, mostly torn off. The remaining text reads: Iesuchrist par ta pas[...] [...]s a[...]goisseuse et d[...] [...]e [...]n [...]r [...] [that is, Iesuchrist par ta passion / Tres angoisseuse et douloureuse / Donne nous par grace amoreuse / De nos pechez remission]. A similar image and caption in a copy of Stella clericorum (Toulouse: Vidua Ioannis de Guerlins, 1521) are recorded by T. Desbarreaux-Bernard in Les pérégrinations de Jean de Guerlins (Montauban: Neveu, 1866), page 11, and in Établissement de l'imprimerie dans la province de Languedoc (Toulouse: Privat, 1875), pages 146-147. Not in Schreiber.; Kislak Center copy acquired for the Penn Libraries with assistance from the Constance L. Rosenthal Book Fund.
