Par son tres humble et tres fidele Serviteur et sujet Seb. le Clerc.; N.C. sculp.; N.C. sculp. "A Paris: chez F. Chereau rue St. Jacques aux 2 pilliers d'Or." For details on this engraving, see Bibliotheque Nationale (France). Cabinet des estampes, Inventaire du fonds francais. Graveurs du XVIIe siècle... (1939; Fine Arts NE647.2 B53 1939), entry for Sebastien Leclerc, no.859 (copy shelved with image). Smith image is a copy of the 7th state of the engraving: the 2nd state of the 2nd copy (described on p.238). Original engraving is dated 1698; plate was purchased by Charles-Nicolas Cochin Père, who then produced this copy. BN catalogue gives no precise date for this copy, however (but probably first half of 18th century). Francois Chereau is listed by Benezit as "graveur du roi et éditeur d'estampes"; he appears to be the "F. Chereau" named on image.; In this allegory of science, an alembic and receiver, along with other chemical apparatus, are visible in the left foreground. Original version of this engraving made in 1698 by Leclerc; this version a copy by Cochin.; Print
