Mosquito vocabulary

Alternate Title:
Mosquitos
Name:
Henderson, George, -1838
Date:
1851
Description:
C. Hermann Berendt's transcription of 59 vocabulary entries in English and Miskito (Mosquito) from the second edition of George Henderson's Account of the British Settlement of Honduras (1811). Berendt's title page, as well as his notation on the cover (Mosquitos, G. Henderson, 1809), also make reference to the first edition. Berendt's version differs slightly from that in Henderson's book: the order of the languages in the columns is reversed (in Henderson's book Miskito is on the left and English on the right); the entry for the Miskito word cortee, which Henderson gives as meaning either God or moon, is listed as two separate entries; and Henderson's entry for the Miskito word soura, with English equivalent bad, is omitted. Berendt's draft version of the same list (1 leaf) is stored in the same folder as the manuscript. In the draft, he includes annotations in red ink in relation to 10 of the entries, with a note indicating that these are the Miskito words as given in Alexander Henderson's book Grammar of the Moskito language (New York, 1846). Berendt's copy of the latter is in the Rare Book Collection, Rare Books & Manuscript Library, University of Pennsylvania. For a letter from Alexander Henderson to Berendt (30 May 1871), in which Henderson makes reference to that work, see Ms. Coll. 700 Item 127.
