[Medical and surgical notes]

Contributor:
Evans, Robert Wiltshire, 1755-1804 (compiler)
Date:
1795
Description:
Late-18th- and early-19th-century compilation of medical and surgical notes and prescriptions, begun by a British Army surgeon and added to by at least one other hand. The earliest pages written by Evans include notes on midwifery (p. 13-26), anatomy and diseases of the reproductive system (p. 27-55), and pregnancy (p. 55-80). Twelve pages at the beginning of Evans' section are missing. The pagination of that section continues (p. 81-100), but includes blank pages and the start of a section written by another hand, the "Collection of Receipts & Memorandums" (p. 88-[171], with p.94-95 missing). This section includes notes and prescriptions for diseases and conditions such as apoplexy, phthisis, hysteria (p. 134), and lumbago, and a brief List of Books (p. 152), which are mostly 18th-century medical and scientific works characterized by author and subject. The same hand continues with the heading "Extracts from Mr. Home's Lectures, 27 8ber 1805" (p. 173), which may refer to lectures of James Home (1760-1844), professor of materia medica at the University of Edinburgh beginning in 1791 (also mentioned in an earlier note (p. 166), and writes additional notes starting from the back of the volume (p. 226-311). Many of the notes in both hands are written in the first person, though perhaps in quoting teachers or authorities, and many refer to diseases of women and children. Some leaves are missing (before p. 13, one after p. 40, one before p.96, one before p. 310, and two after p. 311); the original second gathering (before p. 13) is probably missing.
