[Inquisition proceedings against Don Isidro Lopez de Tobar]

Name:
Leyva, Gerónimo de, 17th century
Date:
1661
Description:
Records of Inquisition proceedings concerning priest and subdeacon Don Isidro Lopez de Tobar, under Commissioner Gerónimo de Leyva, gathered into three groups of stab-stitched bifolia. The proceedings are based in Vigan, the principal town of the archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, but Manila is also mentioned. The first sewn group of 50 leaves includes documents from 1661 and 1665, not in chronological order. Slightly more than half the first group (f. 1-28, 45-46) is on laid paper, stamped with the arms of Philip IV. On the first documents in the group, the seal date is 1658-1659 ("Sello quarto, un quartillo años de mil y seis cientos y cinquenta y ocho y cinquenta y nueve"; f. 1-13, with contemporary foliation) and the date stamped below the seal is 1661; the rest of the laid bifolia are stamped with the arms only and the dates 1662 and 1665 stamped below the seal. The rest of the first group (f. 29-44, 47-50) is written on fragile rice paper, with some leaves splitting or chipping. The second group is a single document of 30 leaves of rice paper written and signed by Gerónimo de Leyva in three sections of numbered paragraphs with citations in the margins for quotations from the Bible, Church Fathers, Church Councils, and Cicero in the text. The final group of eight leaves, with much of its sewing broken, includes documents from 1666 and 1663 (not in chronological order), on both laid and rice paper. The final leaves are damaged with some loss of text from folds and holes, including a document signed by Nicolas de las Infantas y Venegas, who was served as fiscal, inquisitor, and visitor for the Tribunal de la Inquisición en México.
