Description:
Black-and-white photographic prints primarily depicting Philadelphia Health Management Corporation AIDS outreach workers for Public Health Management Corporation and community-based counselors. Prints feature candid photographs of José, Tina, and Ed (outreach workers for Black-and-white photographic prints primarily depicting AIDS outreach workers from Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC)) and community-based counselors in North Philadelphia interacting with people. According to Harvey Finkle, these individuals "walk[ed] the streets daily handing out condoms and bleach kits." It is now known as the Public Health Management Corporation. Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC), founded in 1972, is a nonprofit public health institute that partners with government, foundations, businesses and community-based organizations to improve the health of the community by providing outreach, health promotion, education, research, planning, technical assistance, and direct services. One of their programs, Philadelphia HIV Prevention Street Outreach Project, features community health outreach workers engaging with substance users in individual street level encounters and group venues such as homeless shelters and feeding programs, and provide HIV/HCV risk reduction education. Harvey Finkle (born March 28, 1934) is a self-taught documentary still photographer who has documented the social, economic, cultural, and political issues in the city of Philadelphia and across the globe. Finkle's work largely focuses on historically marginalized communities, including low income and homeless families, homeless veterans, refugees, immigrants, and disabled people, providing documentation of activism in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and focuses on social injustices in the city, the country, and the world.
