Christian missionary work in Bengal and Orissa photograph album, circa 1900-1911

Date:
circa 1900-1911
Description:
This collection is composed of one volume of photos taken in India in the first decade of the 20th century. The majority of the photographs depict people and places related to Christian missionary activity in the Indian cities of Balasore and Midnapore. Churches, schools, orphanages, missionary gatherings and other events are pictured including clergy, students, and parishioners of both European and Indian ancestry. Likely produced by or related to missionaries working with the American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society and the American Free Baptists. The Baptist Young People's Society of Pittsfield, New Hampshire is mentioned and the album includes a photograph of Rev. Sachidananda Rai (1860-1912) who was associated with Baptist missionary activity in Bengal. In addition to religious institutions in Orissa and Bengal, the album includes a few locations further afield such as the mutiny memorial at Lucknow and the Taj Mahal in Agra. A small number of the photographs seem to have been commercially produced. Several pieces of printed ephemera and manuscript correspondence are included in the album including invitations, tickets, and small tracts. Some of the people identified are: Rev. Kamal Nayak, Rev. Joseph Fullerton, Rev. Jacob Misra, and Mrs. Lougher.
