Letters from Cardinal Francesco Maria de'Medici, son of Ferdinand II, and his secretary Paolantonio Conti to Anton Francesco Montauti, envoy to the imperial court in Vienna regarding relations between the three courts of the Holy Roman Empire, the Pope, and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The Cardinal's letters, sent with dispatches, are notably personal in tone, conveying Christmas greetings, concern for Montauti's health, expressions of affection with gratitude for gifts, for example, the first letter in the volume, an effusive thank-you for the gift of a "spiritoso" Muslim slave boy (1 May 1688).; Volume in two sections: 152 items from Francesco Maria de Medici to Anton Francesco Montauti, dated 1 May 1688-10 November 1696; and 229 items from Paolantonio Conti, identified on title sheet within the volume as segretario del Card. Medici, to Montauti, dated 8 October 1689-16 October 1699. Also includes one letter of Agostino Zefferini (18 September 1696) and one letter of Bartolomeo Mazzari (13 April 1696), and copies of letters of papal officials, for example, a letter of Cardinal Ottoboni (9 December 1690).
