Description:

Black-and-white photographic prints depicting members of the Mexican community in South Philadelphia. Prints feature candid images of people at gatherings, including festivals, classes, a public education demonstration in Harrisburg, PA, and an anti-deportation demonstration. The organization JUNTOS is identified as having been present at the anti-deportation demonstration. According to a note in the Harvey Finkle papers, "JUNTOS is an organization of Mexican and Latino immigrants organizing to build power for justice in the city of Philadelphia and our home countries in order to create vibrant, organized, vocal, and healthy communities. The organization began in late 2002 as a volunteer ESL [English as a Second Language] program in response to the growing Latino population in South Philadelphia. In January 2004, JUNTOS opened its own offices and the first Latino community center in South Philadelphia, called la Casa de los Soles." Harvey Finkle (born March 28, 1934) is a self-taught documentary still photographer and photojournalist who has documented social, economic, cultural, and political issues across the city of Philadelphia, the United States, and the world. Finkle's work largely focuses on activism relating to historically underrepresented communities, including people living on low income, unhoused/unsheltered/houseless people/people experiencing homelessness, refugees, immigrants, and disabled people.
