French manuscript estate maps

Date:
1688
Description:
Two French manuscript maps on parchment, drawn in ink and colored with watercolor, formerly in the same collection (numbered 293 and 294 in black ink on their rectos; 81 and 82 on paper labels with blue borders on their versos). The map numbered 293, dated 1688, is of the land divisions in a village near Orléans in the present commune of Saran, department of Loiret, in north-central France. A note signed Fleury says that the map is based on an earlier one of 1657 by "the late Jean Fleury, my father." It shows land holdings with notes of extent measured in arpents, names referring to occupation or use (for example, pottery, pears, walnuts, hospital), and small images of buildings and mills. The holdings are divided by roads labeled with names still in use in Saran: rue de l’Ormeteau (Elm Street), rue du Bois Salé, rue de Montaran, rue des Bruères. A title or signature, difficult to read, is written in ink on the verso. The pictorial map numbered 294 and signed “Jan Daulphin peintre” is probably from the 18th century (Bonhams) and depicts an estate marked with letters listed in a legend providing more detail about locations on the estate, including the family names Landois (or L’Andois), Theard, Bobet, and Bertineau. The map shows houses, gardens, and a vineyard along a road described in the legend as leading to the Loire River. A few words are written in ink and pencil on the verso.
