Play: Hamlet; Notes about E. H. Sothern: Actor who was born in New Orleans, educated in England, and made his New York debut in 1879. Julia Marlowe and Sothern began a collaboration in Romeo and Juliet at the Illinois Theatre, Chicago, in 1904, and eventually married. They played together as Beatrice and Benedick, Ophelia and Hamlet, Katherine and Petruchio, Viola and Malvolio, Portia and Shylock, and the Macbeths. Both were good friends of Horace Howard Furness.; Notes about Julia Marlowe: Born in England, Marlowe came to America in 1870 and became a star when she appeared as Juliet in New York in 1887. Edward H. Sothern and Marlowe began a collaboration in Romeo and Juliet at the Illinois Theatre, Chicago, 1904, and eventually married.
