Abstract:
Collection of documents pertaining to commercial societies and partnerships in Philadelphia, particularly the United Company of Philadelphia for Promoting American Manufactures and the Pennsylvania Society for the Encouragement of Manufactures and the Useful Arts.; Consists of the following items: a certificate dated 8 December 1775 certifying that Samuel Wetherill, Jr. is a stockholder in the United Company of Philadelphia for Promoting American Manufactures, signed by Joseph Stiles as treasurer; receipts to Wetherill as treasurer pro tem of the Manufacturing Committee, dated 1788 and signed by William Beatty, Israel Hallowell, Jacob Harvey, Robert Heysham, James Pearson and Thomas Wood; Wetherill's accounts as chairman of the Manufacturing Committee, dated 21 December 1787 to 9 July 1788 and approved by James Pearson and Nathan Sellers on 30 July 1788; Wetherill's accounts as treasurer pro tem of the Manufacturing Committee, dated 30 July 1788 to 19 January 1789; a report dated 1 March 1793 from William Pollard to John Nicholson, entitled "Estimate of the Cost of Machinery for 1000 Spindles for spinning Cotton Yarn;" an extract from the minutes of the Manufacturing Committee meeting held 2 May 1803 when Wetherill was chairman, signed by Joseph Bennett Eves as secretary; a letter dated 2 June 1803 to Wetherill from Tench Coxe; and an unsigned, undated (ca. 1788) report of the Committee for Manufactures "to the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society for promoting Manufactures & the useful arts."; Also includes an undated, three-page typewritten document describing the items in the collection and summarizing the history of the United Company of Philadelphia for Promoting American Manufactures and the Pennsylvania Society for the Encouragement of Manufactures and the Useful Arts. A handwritten notation indicates that this information comes from pp. 2313ff. of J. T. Scharf and Thompson Westcott's History of Philadelphia, 1609-1884 (Philadelphia: L. H. Everts, 1884).
