Abstract:

Comparative vocabulary including approximately 710 words in Zoque, 530 words in Tzotzil, and 261 in Chaneabal (now called Tojolabal). The words were all recorded in the Mexican state of Chiapas, with the Zoque words coming from Tuxtla Gutiérrez; the Tzotzil words from Venustiano Carranza (at that time called San Bartolomé de los Llanos), except for 20 words from Socoltenango; and the Chaneabal words from Comitán. Also included is a side-by-side Spanish and Zoque text of an exhortation for confession (p. 1-3). At the head of the manuscript proper is the notation: Aputamtos para formar un arte de idiomas y en vocabulario o. dicionario (p. 1), in the hand of José Maria Sánchez. The last section is devoted to idioms (Vocabulario de varios idiomas; p. 16). On the inside upper cover of the paper folder are notes on orthography by C. Hermann Berendt , comprising a listing of 18 Spanish words along with 3 columns showing the Zoque as transcribed by Sánchez; as in an anonymous vocabulary (not further identified); and in Berendt's analytical alphabet. Also present in the manuscript are notations in Sanchez's hand concerning the ecclesiastical calendar for 12-22 April (verso of p. 24), most likely for the year 1866.
