Description:
Ledger of personal expenses and commercial activities in the operation of a store during David Salisbury Franks's residence in Montreal, from 6 July 1774 to 8 February 1776. Brief reference to imprisonment on 3 July 1775, "Profit & Loss sundrys gave as my garnish when put in jail." Persons involved in the transactions include members of the Franks family and Montreal's Jewish community and customers with English and French family names. Items in the transactions include cloth and sewing supplies (Irish linen, calico, chintz, flannel, muslin, ribbons, laces, thread, buttons, buckles), small articles of clothing (hats, gloves, cravats, shoes), food and drink (molasses, loaf sugar, beef, cabbage, mustard, vinegar, tea, wine, rum, gin), and other objects (tableware, paper, penknife, quills, inkstand, scissors, combs, candlesticks, tobacco, soap, nails). The ledger also includes postage and cartage expenses. First gathering (June-September 1774, p. 2-17) mostly detached, with first leaf missing; several leaves severely faded and difficult to read (April-July 1775, p. 57-69). Some leaves torn out from the blank leaves at the end (2 after p. 137, 3 at the end of the volume).
