Collection of copies of or extracts from various documents in Maya made by C. Hermann Berendt in a notebook of lined paper. The texts pertain to Maya history, astrology, calendar, and other aspects of culture, including one poem. This item is the third of 3 volumes; for vols. 1 and 2, see Ms. Coll. 700 Item 42 and Item 43. At the beginning of entry 1 is a table with 12 boxes labeled for the signs of the zodiac (p. 1); and 12 sections of text that follow are each headed by a small symbol, apparently representative of the 12 signs. The last part of that entry displays information in columns under headings for months of the year. The fragments of biblical stories related in entry 2 mention Abraham, Sarah and Isaac. Entry 3 presents parts of a history of the Yucatán found in the Codice Pérez, copied from the Chilam Balam de Mani (p. 34), with corresponding text from the Chilam Balam de Tizimin on facing pages. The earliest date that appears in either text is 1522 (p. 47) and the latest 1611 (p. 48, 49). The leaf tipped in at the end of that entry (numbered 47-48) is largely a duplicate of a preceding leaf (p. 47-48), but with additional footnotes by Berendt. Entry 4 evidently sets the Maya calculation of years into correspondence with the years of the Christian era, which are listed individually, one to a line, from 1 to 1895. Entries 5, 7, and 9 present texts in Maya and the Spanish translation on facing pages. The texts are, respectively, the poem Yacunah Cay (Spanish: Canto de Amor); the title to a domain in Aceneh, with the heading Acineh Cheltun, which mentions the dates 1677, 1767, and 1769; and an order of 1803, by the governor of the Yucatán, Benito Pérez, concerning the punctual delivery of the mail. (In entry 5, only a Spanish translation is included, although Berendt credits the French translation of Brasseur de Bourbourg on the title page.) In entry 6, following a long quotation from Brasseur's work (p. 137), the invocation to the sun is given in Maya, with Spanish and French versions on the facing page. Entry 8 is extracted from papers at the hacienda of Xtepén held by (and/or copied by?) Joaquín Hübbe. Entry 10 contains the Mayan text of two prayers (apparently Christian). Entry 11 is the text of proposals for a peace treaty made by rebel Indians during the Caste War in a letter of 1850 to the parish priest (cura) José Antonio Garcia in the municipality of Chemax, which Berendt copied from a collection of documents about that war held by the priest Crescencio Carrillo.
