Consists of two folders.; Holograph letter by Thomas Jefferson, dated 8 March 1791, Philadelphia, addressed to the President of the National Assembly of France conveying George Washington's appreciation of the tribute paid by the Assembly to the memory of Benjamin Franklin (1 leaf + 2 typed copies).; Photostatic copy of a letter dated 12 November 1806 to John McAlister of Philadelphia, giving the specifications for a pair of eyeglasses that McAlister is to make for Jefferson. Jefferson uses drawings to illustrate the sort of spectacles he wants. The photostat measures 24x18 in. and appears to be an enlarged copy of the letter. The letter was written when Jefferson was President of the U.S. and was franked with his signature in lieu of postage.; Also includes 4 typewritten carbon copies of the letter's contents; one xerox of the typed version; and one page of notes in an unidentified hand on a sheet of stationery belonging to someone named "Maxwelton" of Haverford, Pa. This sheet of notes does not appear to be contemporary with Jefferson's original letter.
