Description:
Texts in the Zoque language relating to the Passion of Christ, in the hand of José M. Sánchez, a priest in Ocozocoautla, in the Mexican state of Chiapas; an attestation by C. Hermann Berendt, dated from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, 5 April 1870, reads: Obsequii de D. José M. Sanchez (f. 1v). Presumably the texts represent chants sung by the Indians of Chiapas during Holy Week, as documented by Sánchez. The manuscript begins with what appears to be a brief prayer in Zoque (f. 3r), followed by fragmentary texts under three headings that appear to be referring to the Passion according to John (secundum Joane; f. 3r), the Passion according to Matthew (secundum Mateum; f. 6r); and the story of the raising of Lazarus (Lasari, f. 3v; Lasarro, f. 5r). Water damage has discolored most of each leaf (f. 3-6).

From the collection of C. Hermann Berendt, later acquired by Daniel Garrison Brinton (ex libris stamp on title page).
